1516 History of the Castello della Sala

Giovanna Monaldeschi della Cervara donates the Castello della Sala to the Opera Pia di Santa Maria (the cathedral chapter of the Orvieto): it passes through various hands until 1940, when the Antinori acquire the entire property. Here the great Umbrian white wines of the Antinori family will be created.

1524 Bastiano Antinori

Bastiano Antinori, an illustrious and important Florentine writer of the second half of the 16th century, is born.
With the nickname of “Grattuggiato” he can be numbered among the original members of the Academy of the Crusca, where he performs the role of “censor”.
Founded in Florence in 1583, the Academy of the Crusca is the oldest linguistic academy in the world, and has as its purpose the study and protection of the Italian language. “Crusca” means “chaff” in Italian, and the role of the academy was to eliminate thechaff.

1517 Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation

Martin Luther, an Augustinian friar, nails the sheets containing his 95 theses to the door of the Cathedral of Wittenberg. This act, in open  conflict with the Roman Catholic church, marks the first step in the Protestant Reformation, a religious movement with a powerful political and social impact.
