The History of the Estate

The History of the Estate

Over the centuries, Monteloro has been the dwelling place of such aristocratic Florentine houses as those of Dante Alighieri and Beatrice Portinari, families which passed their summer months there at their country manors, as the famous manor houses themselves demonstrate. Local folk like to recount the spot as an ideal place for the blossoming love of the poet and his lady, as celebrated in the “Vita Nuova”. They also recount that the area, with its woods and narrow white country lanes, inspired the landscapes of the Divine Comedy. The logo of the Monteloro estate, an imaginary creature which twines the body of a Triton and the wings of a dragon to form the letter “M”, is a homage to this tale.

Challenging Earth

Curiosity and the pleasure of discovery have led the Antinori family to experiment in this new area for quality viticulture. Over time, it has become increasingly clear that the road is long and that there is still much to learn.  The challenge to create cool climate wines in this stretch of Tuscany has just begun.
